UPACARA

Program Notes:

Using an assortment of membranophones along with resonant metallic percussion to imitate gamelan, Upacara depicts a mystic and sometimes barbaric ancient archipelagic ritual.

PERCEPTIONS OF TIME

Multiple Percussion Solo w/ Playback

Program Notes:

Many facets of the world are perceived through a singular sense. We see colors, hear sounds, and feel textures. But what sense or combination of senses do we use for time perception? It is certainly not identified with one particular sense. In fact, it is odd to say that we see or hear time passing. Veritably, even if all of our senses were interrupted, we could still observe the passing of time through our changing patterns of thought. Perhaps, then, we have a special ability beyond the five senses for perceiving time. Or maybe it is more reasonable to think that we notice time through perception of other things.

Time perception raises a number of thought-provoking questions and philosophies. Based on metric modulation and rhythmic phasing, Perceptions of Time attempts to unmask some of the means through which we are made aware of time.

DUPLEX 

Multiple Percussion Duet

Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Bongos, (2) China Cymbals, Vibraphone, Crotales, Large Gong, Ocean Drum, Nutshell Shaker

 

Program Notes: 

Duplex is defined as: 1.) a house that is divided into two halves and is inhabited by two separate families or tenants with separate entrances and exits. 2.) transmission of signals along a communications channel in both directions at the same time, for example, over a telephone line or 3.) consisting of pairs of units or components that perform the same machine function but operate independently.

Modeled after Nebojsa Zivkovic's Trio Per Uno, it is a duet  written with the minimalistic idea of "doing more with less."  Many traits of the two most influential composers in my career (Steve Reich and Nebojsa Zivkovic) are evident, along with the characteristics stated in the above mentioned definitions.
